Chemistry Program

Chemistry – the central science – is a discipline in which students learn the scientific principles that govern how atoms/molecules interact. In chemistry students will use math and physics to learn how chemists apply them to discover the principles that govern how interactions occur, what reaction products to expect, the molecular nature of life processes, and how to perform chemical analyses of the world around us. Since it is integral to science, emphasis on problem-solving and techniques will be included at every level.

We teach students how to use modern scientific instrumentation and how to interpret the resulting data. We encourage supervised independence in the laboratory because we want our students to think like researchers. Our program will teach students to solve problems, critically evaluate data, organize and present material, write scientifically, develop careful laboratory skills and to become independent and creative thinkers. Our chemistry program has been very successful and our graduates have succeeded in a diverse array of careers.

The Goals of the Chemistry major are to:

  • Provide opportunities for immediate employment as a chemist or as a chemistry teacher.
  • Provide sufficient background to enter graduate school in chemistry or to enter professional schools in medicine or other fields.
  • Inspire objectivity in thinking and creativity in problem solving to enable students to adapt as science and the job market change.
